1275K Reflections — permanent generative purple LED light environment in the Washington DC lobby

Reflections is a permanent realtime generative light installation by Studio A N F, delivered in 2022 at the 1275K building in Washington DC. The work is a system of colorful LED strips placed throughout the building lobby, driven by a custom generative lighting design software that runs at night. It complements the studio's daytime realtime graphics installation at the same site and extends Studio A N F's generative practice into architectural lighting.

As night falls, the 1275K lobby transforms into a public-space media installation: Reflections' LED strips paint the space with vibrant hues and dynamic patterns, redefining the way visitors perceive and interact with the building.

The Essence of Reflections: Blending Art with Technology

At the core of Reflections lies the seamless blend of art and technology. This media art installation isn't just a visual treat; it's an intelligent system that uses generative lighting design to create an ever-evolving visual narrative. The LED strips, strategically placed throughout the lobby of the 1275K building, come to life at night, painting the space with vibrant hues and dynamic patterns.

Generative Lighting Design

What sets Reflections apart in the world of public space media installations is its generative lighting design. This approach allows the artwork to generate patterns and colors algorithmically, ensuring that no two moments are the same. Visitors are treated to a unique experience with each visit, as the installation responds to various environmental and contextual inputs, making it a living, breathing entity within the urban landscape.
