Media Architecture

Studio A N F creates permanent computational artworks for architecture. Installed on large-scale LED surfaces, media façades and architectural displays, these systems generate their imagery continuously in realtime — responding to time, data, environment and, where appropriate, artificial intelligence.

Rather than producing content that is rendered and played back, Studio A N F builds the software system that becomes part of the architecture. The artwork runs autonomously, continuously generating new visual states over months and years.

Founded by Andreas Nicolas Fischer in Berlin in 2008, Studio A N F has developed generative and computational artworks for architectural environments for more than fifteen years. Recent permanent installations include Hyundai Headquarters Seoul, MIXC Hangzhou, Beomjin Building Seoul and Longhua Hui Shanghai.

Computational systems for architecture

  • Site-specific systems. Every work is developed around the architecture, physical context, viewing conditions and characteristics of its display surface.
  • Realtime generative software. The artwork exists as software rather than a fixed timeline, continuously generating new visual states.
  • Autonomous operation. Systems are engineered for permanent, unattended operation and integration with architectural media infrastructure.
  • Responsive environments. Time, weather, cameras, sensors, live data and machine-learning models can become inputs to the work.
  • Architectural integration. Studio A N F works directly with architects, media consultants, art consultants, developers and LED integrators from initial concept through commissioning.
  • Long-term operation. Remote support, maintenance and continued development can be provided after installation.

Generative, responsive and intelligent

A media architecture project can operate as a completely autonomous generative system or respond dynamically to its surroundings. Computer vision, environmental sensing, live data and machine-learning models can allow the work to perceive and respond to changes in the building and its environment.

These inputs do not determine a fixed sequence of images. They influence the behaviour of the underlying computational system, creating an artwork that remains recognisable while continuously producing new states.

How Studio A N F works

01 — Architecture
Studio A N F analyses the building, viewing conditions, display geometry, pixel grid and technical infrastructure.

02 — System
A computational concept defines how the artwork behaves, evolves and responds over time.

03 — Prototype
The system is developed against the actual display geometry and tested through simulation, realtime previews and hardware tests where required.

04 — Integration
The finished software is deployed together with the local media or LED integrator and calibrated on the architectural surface.

05 — Operation
The work runs autonomously on the building's media infrastructure, with optional remote monitoring, maintenance and continued development.

Technical integration

Each system is engineered for the actual resolution, aspect ratio, pixel geometry, brightness limits and viewing distance of its architectural surface. The artwork runs natively as a realtime system rather than as a prerecorded video timeline.

Studio A N F can integrate with existing media-server infrastructure or collaborate with the project's technical team during system design. Depending on the installation, projects can incorporate realtime graphics engines, custom software, sensors, cameras, environmental data, external data sources and machine-learning systems.

What does a media architecture commission cost?

Permanent architectural commissions are quoted individually based on scale, software complexity, sensing and data requirements, integration, commissioning and long-term operational requirements.

Studio A N F can work from an existing architectural media specification or collaborate with architects, consultants and integrators during the technical design phase. A project scope and quotation are developed after reviewing the location, display system and intended behaviour of the artwork.

Does the system need staff to operate it?

No. Studio A N F's media architecture systems are designed for autonomous operation on the building's media infrastructure. Once deployed, the artwork continuously generates its visuals without requiring a playback operator or manually scheduled video content.
