Generative Systems

Studio A N F designs generative systems: computational frameworks that create visual outcomes from rules rather than fixed compositions. Instead of designing a single image, the studio defines a visual language and the system capable of producing many variations within it.

A generative system can exist as an autonomous artwork, a visual identity, a print process or the underlying logic of a large-scale installation. Each output can be different while remaining recognisably part of the same system.

Andreas Nicolas Fischer has developed generative work since 2007, preceding the foundation of Studio A N F in Berlin in 2008. The studio's practice has since moved between software art, algorithmic drawing, large-scale prints, generative identities and permanent computational environments.

Designing systems instead of images

  • Generative artworks. Rule-based software creates drawings, images, compositions and continuously evolving visual works rather than reproducing a predetermined image.
  • Computational identities. Logos, patterns and graphic elements can exist as variable systems whose outputs change while preserving a coherent visual identity.
  • Executable design rules. Visual principles can be encoded directly into software, turning design logic into a system that produces its own applications.
  • Multiple outputs. A single generative system can produce material for print, digital displays, products, publications and architectural surfaces at different resolutions and formats.
  • Physical translation. Computational structures can be translated into large-scale prints, murals, textiles, objects and other material applications.
  • Spatial extension. Generative systems can become the visual foundation for realtime environments and permanent media architecture.

A space of possibilities

Traditional design defines a finished composition. Generative design defines the conditions from which compositions emerge. Parameters, constraints, probability, geometry, simulation and algorithmic processes establish a space of possible outcomes rather than a single final image.

The central design problem therefore becomes one of authorship at the level of behaviour: determining what can change, what remains constant and how variation can occur without losing the identity of the work.

This approach allows a visual language to expand across thousands of outputs or continuously over time while retaining the underlying characteristics that make the system recognisable.

How Studio A N F works

01 — Language
Studio A N F defines the visual principles, constraints and characteristics that should remain recognisable across the system's outputs.

02 — Rules
Those principles are translated into algorithms, parameters and relationships that determine how the system can vary.

03 — Exploration
Large numbers of outputs are generated and evaluated to understand the boundaries of the system and refine its visual behaviour.

04 — Application
The system is adapted to its intended formats, whether identity, print, product, screen, architectural surface or realtime environment.

05 — Delivery
Depending on the project, Studio A N F delivers finished outputs, production tools or the executable generative system itself.

What is a generative identity?

A generative identity replaces one rigid graphic configuration with a controlled system of variation. Software generates different logos, patterns or compositions according to defined visual rules, allowing each application to be distinct while remaining recognisably part of the same identity.

The system therefore becomes part of the design itself: not merely a tool used to create the identity, but the mechanism through which the identity continues to produce new forms.

Can generative systems produce physical work?

Yes. Computational systems can generate source material at extremely high resolution for prints, murals, textiles and other physical applications. Studio A N F has used generative processes across digital and physical media, allowing the same underlying visual logic to move between software, screen, architecture and material objects.
